Mrs. Rita Hillman, the remarkable founder of the Hillman Nursing Scholars program, passed away peacefully on November 8, 2007.  As all of you know, Mrs. Hillman was a wonderful advocate for nurses and the nursing profession.   With the creation of the Hillman Scholars program in 1989, Mrs. Hillman provided the nation with a new model for nursing scholarship programs; and with the creation of the Hillman Alumni Nursing Network in 1996, she gave those fortunate nurses a support system to be mentored and grow in.  We all owe much to her foresight and generosity that to date has resulted in over 600 Hillman alumni.   

Founded by the Alex Hillman Family Foundation, and the vision of the extraordinary Rita Hillman, the Hillman Scholars Program is dedicated to promoting excellence in nursing and benefits nursing students at the New York University School of Nursing, Phillips Beth Israel School of Nursing, and the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing (For more information about these schools please click on their logos). In exchange for their tuition support, Hillman Scholars agree to carry out their senior-year or master's clinical experiences in a health-care setting and make a commitment to work in direct patient care nursing roles in New York City for the first two years following their graduation.

What began as a remarkable vision for promoting nursing has resulted in an ever-growing group of Hillman Alumni who now maintain their strong ties through the Hillman Alumni Nursing Network (HANN). Each year, HANN holds a reception at the New York Penn Club, giving current scholarship recipients and alumni an opportunity to meet with Hillman Family Foundation board members and to celebrate their achievements.  In addition, HANN helps provide former and current Hillman Scholars with a variety of networking and social opportunities as well as career support. The Program boasts over 600 alumni, many of whom have continued to work in New York City.
